the dilemma

In our 21st century society, dressed up seems to have been largely overtaken by dressed down. Look in any bar, restaurant, café or workplace and people are wearing casual clothes, and shoes, and may or not seem to be bothered about their appearance. While this is a trend that has been largely driven by the younger generations, it has undoubtedly been accelerated by the fact that more and more people now work from home. Being dressed to the nines, or at least very smartly, can now seem a bit overdone, and might be difficult to carry off when those around you look so casual.

So, when you are dressing to go out, there are no longer a cut and dried set of rules or clothes. There might be a range of principles, or guidelines, and you may also be at the mercy of someone else’s vision of the ‘right thing to wear’. With all this in mind, what steps can you take so that you look good regardless of the circumstances? Do you wonder how you can do this while reflecting who you are? It might sound like a daunting proposition, but if you can feel good about how your styling works once, then you can repeat the concept time and time again.

There are a few important points to be aware of when you are looking for your own unique ‘I am bothered’ recipe. Getting the feel right will be a balance between your image and your personality. Your choices as an introvert will probably be very different from those of a life and soul of the party type. Keeping true to yourself, while occasionally thinking outside your comfort zone, will mean that your sense of confidence and style will carry you through any occasion.

Whatever the situation, or how you feel at the time, my guidelines are the same, so see which aspects resonate with you and then be creative. This doesn’t mean that you need lots of new clothes or have to spend lots of money. I passionately believe that we should all have fewer things but wear them more. Finding a dressing solution that works for you, either by finding something new to fulfil your criteria, or elevating the clothes that you already have is the answer. Building your core collection around multipurpose items is surely where you will get most value.

Choosing wisely so these items do more than one job for you, not only saves you time and space, but also money. Think about accessories as well as clothing to do the job. A pair of jeans and a shirt can look very different with some snazzy ankle boots and a beautiful scarf or wrap. Chunky jewellery can transform a simple sweater or sweater dress. Look how white trainers have become popular, and how they make what could be considered smart tea-dresses into something you can wear every day.
