what is your motivation?
Why are you wearing what you are today? How were you feeling when you got dressed? Did you make a conscious decision to put that jumper on or was it the first thing that came to hand when you opened your cupboard? When you decided what to wear, what was on your mind? Have you dressed to impress yourself or someone else, if so, how did that work for you? Are you dressing to reflect your creativity, for practicality, or for the weather conditions? Have you been told what to wear by your employer, or by convention, or can you please yourself?
While these may seem like simple questions, we rarely take the time to ask them, or to find the answers. Read them through again and note the first answer that comes to mind. It may be one word or a sentence, it really doesn’t matter, just take a moment to consider your responses. Now for a few more brain teasers.
Do you consider some clothes only suitable for best, and if so, can you explain why? When is best anyway? Do you think that some styles don’t work for you, and is this your opinion or have you been influenced by others? What is on your mind when you think about your image? Are you filled with confidence and positivity, are your thoughts detracting and negative, or perhaps you feel completely neutral and unmotivated in either direction.
When it comes to your view of your image, what comes to mind? Do you see it as a 2-dimensional photo, or as a rounded reflection of who you are as an individual? We are bombarded with ‘perfection’ from filtered social media posts, and the current trend for influencers, where everything is pictured as a snapshot of an idealised life/image providing ever more impossible-to-live-up-to content.
Taking a more pragmatic view, it is my belief that our image is a multifaceted and wonderful thing. Something that is a mix of many elements, something that changes with time and with the seasons. It is importantly something that has the power to change how you feel, and that can also change because of how we are feeling at any one point in time. The is never perfection, how can there be? Surely the joy of getting dressed and reflecting the real you is all about the path of evolution rather than striving for an impossible dream?
The image you portray and the story you want to tell, comes from somewhere deep within you. Knowing your motivation, and understanding what you want to achieve, means that you are closer to finding your creativity and tapping into the great intuitive ideas you have. So, think about why you chose to wear that jumper, or those jeans, or that pair of shoes. The answers don’t need to be deep and meaningful, and I’d be surprised if they were, but bringing this concept to your attention might start to give you some interesting insights.
